The 37th edition of the Athens Marathon (“Athens Marathon The Authentic”), a race with tradition, was attended by our colleagues LT Daniel Serban, SGM Ileana Ianoşiu-Hangan, SGM Francisc Sarosi, CADET SERGEANT Tudor Ilade and CADET SERGEANT FIRST CLASS Onisim Rosu.
In the morning of November 8, the representatives of the Land Forces Academy participated in the administrative activities related to the competition that united the Plain of the Marathon with the stadium of the first modern Olympiad of 1896. In the afternoon of that day they also enjoyed beautiful moments of relaxation by visiting cultural and historical objectives in the Greek capital, such as the “George Averof Battleship” (Greek warship, built in 1911) and the Parthenon (the temple dedicated to the Athenian goddess), these activities strengthening the connections already existing among the members of the participating institutions.
Saturday was marked by the official opening of the marathon, which took place at the cemetery where lie the remains of the brave Greek fighters who stopped the first invasion of the Persians in the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC, and within whose framework. a torch was lit in the fighters' memory, which was later handed to the best athlete present at the race.
The next day, along with 16,528 other participants, our colleagues started the classic marathon race, with a route measuring 42 km and 195 meters. According to the organizers, the Athens Marathon route is considered to be the most difficult in the world, summing up a total level difference of about 400 meters, the atmospheric factors worsening the conditions of the race (humidity and high temperatures).
The sports adventure taking place on the Greek regions ended with good results for our colleagues. CADET SERGEANT Tudor Ilade managed to be the first out of the 162 nationals participating in the race, crossing the finish line after 2h.56min.08seconds, and SGM Francisc Sarosi ranked on fourth place, finishing the race after 3h.21min.15seconds.
